Banjul, The Gambia – February 12, 2025 – UNFPA The Gambia, in collaboration with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and key national stakeholders led by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, has launched the Italian-funded project on Accelerating the Prevention and Elimination of Gender-Based Violence and the Promotion of Reproductive Health in Senegal and The Gambia. The mini-launch, held at the OIC Conference Center, underscores a renewed commitment to safeguarding the rights, safety, and well-being of women and girls across both countries.
The initiative, funded by the Italian government through AICS, is designed to reinforce national policies and legal frameworks, expand access to survivor-centered services, and strengthen multi-sectoral approaches to prevent GBV and harmful practices. It aims to bring together governments, civil society organizations, and local communities to drive sustainable change.
UNFPA reaffirmed its dedication to working alongside its partners to implement concrete actions that protect and empower women and girls. The Representative expressed gratitude to the Government of Italy for its leadership and support, as well as to the Governments of The Gambia for their commitment to advancing gender equality and reproductive health.
As the project unfolds, stakeholders are called upon to maintain momentum, advocate for policy reforms, and invest in initiatives that ensure every woman and girl can live free from violence, discrimination, and fear.
