In a momentous ceremony, UNFPA The Gambia, in collaboration with the Maa Foundation and partners, inaugurated the Women Resource Center for Food Processing in Kerr Jarrga, North Bank region, on Saturday, December 16, 2023. The food processing center, known as Gambi Foods, is funded by the UN Peacebuilding Fund under the Strengthening Women’s Political Participation and Leadership project. This initiative aims to reduce food losses and provide employment opportunities for women.
The launch ceremony was graced by the First Lady, HE Fatoumatta Bah Barrow.
About the center
With a strong focus on advancing women's economic empowerment, the creation of women empowerment and resource centers is groundbreaking. These center serves as a platform for women to enhance their knowledge, build networks, acquire skills, increase social capital, and offer financial support to female candidates, regardless of their political affiliations. The initiative aims to provide comprehensive support, including training and essential resources, enabling women to excel in the food processing sector, fostering economic independence. Ultimately, it seeks to address barriers hindering women's participation in politics and leadership.
The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and a dedicated trainer, offering specialized programs meticulously designed to enhance women's proficiency in food processing techniques, quality control measures, market linkages, and entrepreneurship skills. Beyond its role as an educational hub, it also functions as a focal point for mentorship and networking opportunities. Partner organizations engaged in this transformative project reiterated their commitment to ensuring the success of this initiative.
During the inauguration ceremony, speeches underscored the pivotal role that this center would play in transforming livelihoods and fostering economic independence among women. In her address at the center's launch, the First Lady, HE Fatoumatta Bah Barrow, reaffirmed her commitment to support women in improving their lives and livelihoods.
The UNFPA Country Representative, Ndeye Rose Sarr, reported that 76 women have already undergone training and will contribute to the center's operations, thereby enhancing service delivery.
“It's not just about innovation meeting empowerment; it's about a future where women are not just part of but at the forefront of economic prosperity. It's not just about political participation; it's about an inclusive, impactful revolution that our community truly deserves” Ms. Sarr said of the center.
The inauguration concluded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, signifying the official initiation of activities at the center. Attendees were guided through a tour of the facility, highlighting its modern infrastructure and showcasing the variety of food products manufactured on-site.
As the center opens its doors, it marks the beginning of a new era for women in the region, poised to unlock their untapped potential and make substantial contributions to economic growth and development.
