UNFPA/The Guardian are proud to announce the media award for journalists reporting on FGM across Africa. The award is named "the Efua Dorkenoo Pan African Award for Reportage on Female Genital Mutilation"

This award was originally announced by the United Nations Secretary-General BAN Ki-moon during a meeting in Kenya last October. Part of UNFPA's important work to eliminate FGM in Africa, the award is a joint collaboration between UNFPA's Technical Division, the Media and Communications Branch and The Guardian, which is among the top three global media most-often read or cited by international policy makers.

The aim of this initiative is to increase media awareness and engagement on FGM within community, national and regional media outlets and recognize and encourage outstanding efforts of journalists throughout Africa. The overall winner of the competition will win a month of training at The Guardian in London.
