In commemoration of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, Her Excellency the First Lady of The Gambia, Madam Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow on 23rd May 2022 launched the Zero Fistula Gambia Campaign. An initiative of UNFPA The Gambia and the Office of the First Lady in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Welfare & other stakeholders, the campaign will raise public awareness on the condition and call for its eradication.

The 2022 State of World Population focuses on the theme: "Seeing the unseen: the case for action in the neglected crisis of unintended pregnancy." The report was launched in The Gambia on 20th May 2022 by the honourable Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare on behalf of His Excellency the Vice President of The Gambia.

As part of investments to strengthen The Gambia’s Gender-Based Violence response mechanism, UNFPA with funding from the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund supported the establishment of the Women and Girls’ Empowerment Centre dubbed ”The Orange Centre”. The centre is the country’s first fully integrated facility for the protection of girls and women.

On 22 June 2021, the UNFPA Country Representative Mr. Kunle Adeniyi was joined by Her Excellency the First Lady of The Gambia Madam Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow to inaugurate the space. This video shows highlights of the inauguration ceremony.

As part of efforts to enhance public information about UNFPA's three transformative results and ensure community ownership, the Gambia Country Office held a 12-day campaign in the Upper River, Central River and North Bank Regions of The Gambia to create awareness, provide services and engage communities on issues around Sexual and Reproductive Health, Gender Based Violence and harmful practices among others.

As the world commemorates International Youth Day 2021 (12 August) UNFPA pledges to do everything we can to act with young people on the challenges they face. We stand with them in their fight to claim the world they imagine - and deserve.

As the international community observes World Population Day (11 July), UNFPA advises against reactionary policy responses, which can be extremely harmful if they violate rights, health and choices.
